Someone has to keep innovative companies like Apple Computer on their toes. If it weren't for Microsoft, we would probably all still be using the original Macintosh with it's tiny 9" black and white screen - and, instead of making insanely great computers even more insanely great, Steve Jobs would probably now instead be off making movies or something...
Hidden from the surface of the technology landscape is the fact that Microsoft is rapidly losing its hold on the desktop platform. As more and more Web 2.0 companies, such as Google, begin to turn the browser into a seemless application platform, the operating system no longer matters. In such an environment, lightly coupled applications can arise from any corner and provide a more robust and rapidly updated service.
